More Poppies!!!

Yeah...I know...
sooo many poppies!!!
I couldn't get enough of them!!!

Add that beautiful purple and little bit of yellow to the bright orange of the poppies...Wow!!!
Mother Nature in all her glory!

"The hills are alive..."

...with the sound of music and poppies fluttering in the breeze!

No people!!!
But I do see a face in the mountain every time
I see this one!

I love how the light fell on this lighter poppy...

Another plein air painter!

Did I mention there were a lot of people?
A couple taking a kissing selfie...
checking messages(even in the presence of such beauty?)...
...and more photographers with their cameras
in hand!

On our way out and back to the car I saw this mountain with the interesting textures along the sides...
...reminded me a bit of the Devil's Postpile in Mammoth!

I believe there was a path up there.

A poppy with fringe...is it a type of poppy?
Or was it from the wind?

Lots of green too!

Ooops...this one was in the last post...should I remove it?
...Nah...

And another of poppies against the bright blue sky!!!

"Summer set lip to earth's bosom bare,
And left the flushed print in a poppy there.
I will touch a hundred flowers
And not pick one."
Edna St. Vincent Millay

The people visiting the poppies ought to have
read this quote before visiting the poppies in Elsinore!

California Super Bloom!!!

Wednesday, March 13, two fellow Photochromers and I
ventured south to Lake Elsinore, Walker Canyon
to capture some photos of the
current California Super Bloom!
(Photochromers is our local camera club)

With no shortage of visitors, it was a challenge just to
get to the poppies!

But we managed to find some along the road...

...and even a plein air painter!

Some pretty spectacular sights just along the road!

It really was amazing to see the crowds...on a Wednesday!!!
And, unfortunately, even with signage all about,
people still wandered into the poppies.

A lot of photography going on...trying to capture
their friends amongst the poppies.
Even when they stepped lightly and carefully,
there was a fair amount of tamping down of the flowers.

This gentleman was the second plein air painter we saw.

And then we were in the hills with the poppies in abundance!

I love the orange poppies against that bright blue sky!

My friend Jeanne walked ahead and was photographing
this beautiful sight from a different angle!

The purple flowers were a beautiful compliment to
the orange poppies.

Ohhh...and look what we happened to see!
Yep...a photographer was photographing these models
plus one other...naked...against the poppies!
They were on a knoll above most of the rest of us...
but they definitely drew some attention!

I just couldn't get enough of the poppies against the blue sky!

Lots of dogs on our walk through the poppies...
a puppy in a backpack, and a pack of dogs walking
with their dog walker!
Very well behaved dogs, I might add!

Then there was just a wisp of the moon!

"Of all the wonderful things in the wonderful universe
of God, nothing seems to me more surprising than the
planting of a seed in the blank earth and the result thereof.
Take that Poppy seed, for instance;
it lies in your palm, the merest atom of matter,
hardly visible, a speck, a pin's point in bulk,
but within it is imprisoned a spirit of beauty ineffable,
which will break its bonds and emerge from the
dark ground and blossom in a splendor so dazzling
as to baffle the powers of description."
Celia Thaxter
American writer and poet

More poppies to come!

A Weekend at the Albion River Inn...

Mendocino is a really lovely area of California to visit.
And the Albion River Inn is one of my very favorite places to stay!
Each room has a deck in back, overlooking this spectacular view.

Pretty awesome visit...
sitting on the deck overlooking where the river meets the ocean...
catching up with friends Steve and Sharron...

 Drinking a bit of wine....

...well...maybe a little more than a bit...

...and enjoying the sunsets!

Next post you'll see how we spent our day!!!

View from the Queen Mary...

"Once you have traveled, the voyage never ends...
The mind can never break off from the journey."
Pat Conroy

The Long Beach cityscape from the Queen Mary!

Fooling around trying to get a pic of the city lights through the
porthole...not an easy task!
Between the inside lights reflections on the porthole window...
to trying to get the city lights in focus instead of the porthole!
All hand held...should have been a tripod and long exposure...
and should have done a little focus trickery so that both
the porthole and cityscape was in focus...
ahhh well...
It is what it is!

Mending Kids Hometown Clinic...

If you were visiting my blog last year, you might remember my post about
Mending Kids Hometown Clinic...
Mending Kids is an International organization that operates in much the same way as
Doctors Without Borders...except for the fact that they specialize in working with kids!
Mending Kids sends doctors and volunteers all over the world to countries where
healthcare is tough to get, especially for children.
Once or twice a year they hold what's called a Hometown Clinic.
The Hometown Clinic is primarily for kids who have been turned down
by their insurance or Obama Care, for various surgical procedures.
Generally the surgeries are considered cosmetic, but are really vital to the kids self esteem.
For instance, one lovely little girl was about to enter kindergarten, and she had what is called a
Hairy Nevis...basically a mole with hair growing out of it.
This Hairy Nevis was on the little girl's face and was about the size of a dollar coin.
Can you imagine starting kindergarten with something like that?
These doctors, nurses and volunteers gave up their time and talent to help these beautiful kids!

The ages of these kids range from very young, to teenagers.

Waiting in pre-op can be pretty daunting...
even when Lambie Pie is sitting there with you!

I don't know about you, but I think it would pretty much suck if
I had to have surgery on my birthday!
But the people at Mending Kids did what they could to make it a happy one for this young guy!!!

Every time I see my surgery shots I'm amazed that I have been fortunate enough
to have such an amazing experience.

Contrary to how the lighting looks in my close up of the surgical procedure,
each surgical theater is lit up bright as day.
The reason the ambient light looks so dark is because I'm focusing in on the
procedure and there are extremely bright lights focused on the procedure.
Shooting this clinic is the hardest photography I've ever done simply because of the crazy lighting!

The anesthesiologist monitors the vitals.

The nurses shine during post-op care!

It's amazing to watch these surgeons work!

Pretty in pink even while in surgery!!!

There is a break room where volunteers, Docs and nurses can take a break and get a bite to eat...

Our birthday boy is happy to be going home!

A comforting hug comes in all colors!

You might recognize this volunteer...Luis Guzman!

Aimee Garcia trying to cheer up waking young girl...

Luis Guzman and Keltie Knight...

Keltie Knight, Aimee Garcia and Luis Guzman preparing to go in to observe surgeries!

China McClain is learning how to make balloon animals...

Nick Simmons and Aimee Garcia emulating dad Gene Simmons famous expression
for this young guy in pre-op!

Even Dad is getting into it!!!
This dad didn't speak any English, only Mandarin.  Thank goodness for smart phones!
Using various translation apps, doctors, nurses, and volunteers were able to communicate!

Apprehension...

Sometimes it just helps for Mom to hold your hand when they're getting ready to start...

Lambie Pie and this little sweetheart made it through the surgery with flying colors!
Lambie Pie even got a bandage!

Just some of the dedicated docs, nurses, and volunteers hamming it up for the cameras!!!

This year was a little different for me as I'm due for surgery next week!
Being able to visit and photograph these surgeries was oddly comforting.
The focus of these surgeons is remarkable.
Throughout each of the surgeries, docs and staff moved about like
they were choreographed.

I'll be taking a break from posting for a bit...
I'm getting a new knee!!!
