Our Little Corner of the World...visiting Melk-Krems, Austria!!!

Entering the courtyard of the Melk Abbey in Melk, Austria.

The Melk Abbey is a 900 year old Abbey built on sheer cliffs above the Danube.
The original building was destroyed by fire and was rebuilt in the 18th century...
...that's still a good 300+ years!!!

Inside the Abbey is a museum with artifacts collected over the years
including old vestments.

Now...take a good look at this ceiling...

...it looks domed, doesn't it?

Nope!!!  The ceiling is perfectly flat.
The illusion is all in the perspective of the fresco!

A lovely view of the city below...

A glimpse of the Danube from the Abbey...

A stunning staircase...

It's amazing to me how with each Church or Cathedral we visited
they became more and more intricate and spectacular!
This is the Melk's Abbey Church.

Pretty spectacular isn't it?

Next stop...Vienna!!!

  1. I can't believe the 3D effect, the artistry (in painting and construction) is stunning. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Even standing there in the room and looking directly up at the ceiling it was almost impossible to get that it was indeed flat...it was amazing!!!

  2. I can remember my wife (who is Australian) being just amazed at the age of the buildings in the UK - did you feel the same way about these?

    1. Absolutely Stewart! What amazes me as well is that so many of these cathedrals took several generations just to build!!!
