Oooops!!! Our Little Corner of the World forgot to post one of the more unique aspects of Amsterdam!!! X-RATED!!!

How could I forget this???

As evening set in...

...yes...we had to stroll down the red light district...
...along with every other tourist in Amsterdam!!!
X-RATED!!!

It's true...the brothels have windows displaying their "goods"...
and according to our friends who had been there before, about 30 years ago...
the "goods" have changed!!!
Most of the gals were quite attractive...many with the "school girl" or librarian look
with glasses and braids or bun...
a few gyrations to get your attention...
then checking Facebook on their cell phones!!!

On our walk along the district, TheChief spotted the Museum of Prostitution!
In the window there was a Trip Advisor posting of comments...
Instead of 5 stars...the comments had 5 ........  well... consider it X-rated!!!
 We passed...and walked on.

And of course...you don't want to miss the tattoo convention...do you???

Not far from this sign we passed a tattoo parlour...
the quintessential drunk guy was in the doorway discussing the tattoo he wanted...
again...X-rated!!!

I must say that our stroll through the district was quite an education...

In all seriousness...yes...prostitution is legal in Amsterdam...
what we found interesting is that contrary to what we thought, drugs are not.
While we smelled a fair amount of marijuana (enough to think "contact high"!)
we were told by several guides, that in fact, marijuana and other drugs are not legal...
they are merely tolerated.

Well...enough is enough!!!
Gotta capture the real beauty of the city!!!

  1. One of my father's aunts on a whim when he was back in Amsterdam took him for a stroll through the red light district!

  2. I think I'd avoid it. Too depressing! I wonder what brings a woman to it instead of some other job. Perhaps it's just a different lifestyle.

    1. By our standards I would think the same, and believe that there is an element of degradation and loss of self involved...but when it's legal, and quite accepted? I'm not at all sure. Prostitution has been around for a long, long time and is not going to go away...

  3. I've never been to Amsterdam, but if I go, I would likely take a stroll just to say I had visited. Certainly no stopping, not my thing.

    1. The first time I caught a glimpse of a girl in a window, we were walking on a side street and I happened to glance down, probably because I saw movement...boy was I surprised!!! It was in the afternoon and we weren't in "the district" proper, so I was taken aback!

  4. Was there in 1970 as a 20-year-old. Was amazed then as I would be today. Why not? is my feeling. If it doesn't hurt anyone, then live and let love. Nice photos!

    1. It's a social enigma that I'm not at all sure how to address...

  5. Since Amsterdam is so big, I would love to love there (but it would be too far from my grandkids so that's why we stay here) - For a Dutchman (woman) the red light district is still as mindboggling as for an American - that is when you value yourself as a woman and have skills for a job. Ninety percent are of a blue collar class, and a single mom and do not have any skills, and this is they think the only way to provide for themselves.Iit happens here plenty too, in the Gentleman's clubs, the only thing that lacks are the "windows."
